One of the best parts of the old NCAA Football video games was the uniqueness of each team’s playbook.
There were 130+ playbooks, each with some unique formations and cool plays. So much time has passed that many of us don’t remember just how cool some of those plays were and today we aim to change that.
Those of us who still play Madden know that over the past 10 years playbooks have been significantly reduced. It would be a huge mistake for EA Sports College Football 25 to have those same kinds of generic/boring playbooks.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the coolest plays from the last college football video game, NCAA Football 14, that need to be in this year’s game!
WR Mid Screens

The tunnel screen or “WR Mid Screen” is such an important play in college football. NCAA Football 14 had this play in all kinds of different formations.
Shotgun Empty Quads Mtn Read Option & PA Read

Imagine coming out with 4 wide receivers to the right, auto-motioning one of them into the backfield and then executing either a read option or a play action pass.
Cool formation + Cool play design = A lot of fun on offense.
Ace Twin TE Flex – Posts

Remember in the NCAA Football video games they used the terminology “Ace” instead of “Singleback” which is used in Madden but it’s effectively the same thing.
You’ve got 2 very effective route combinations on both sides and the running back coming on one of the most unique routes in the game.
Pistol Twin TE – Motion WR Option

Motion has always been a big part of the college game, and so has the Pistol offense. This play combines the two and hits you with a triple option that the defense would never see coming.
Inverted Veer

You’ll also want to add in some play action plays that look like inverted veer plays like these:

The Option Pass

Nothing screams college football like gimmicky plays and the option pass is one of the absolute best!
Wishbone/Wingbone/Flexbone Formations
Yes, only a few teams run still run these formations but the Wishbone and Flexbone are so nostalgic that they need to be in EA Sports College Football 25.
Just look at some of these formations:

Scheming up a unique offense from an old school formation is one of the great joys of football video games.
Maryland I

Nothing says we are going to run the ball down your throat like the Maryland I. Now try and stop it!
Weird Routes

Ideally, we get to design our own plays but its highly unlikely that ever happens, so we’ll have to make do with cool route combinations like this one from NCAA Football 14.

Are there any other cool plays or formations from past games that you want to see this year? Let us know in the comments!

You posted illegal formations that could never appear in the game. Flexbone: Twins Over and Wingbone: Trips Over have uncovered linemen and covered-up receivers. Try again.
I appreciate you stopping by and your comment! All of these were taken directly from the previous NCAA Football video game so if a formation’s diagram is slightly off and one receiver should be ever so slightly off the line of scrimmage, I’m sure that’s something they’ll account for in the new game.
If the tackle reports at eligible, he can be uncovered. They have the receiver covered up and ineligible to compensate for the eligbile tackle.
Thank you for providing the additional information!
